On December 28, 2007, at approximately 7:00 PM, a DWI Checkpoint will be held in and/or around Benson. This checkpoint will involve multiple agencies, and it will also be the official "unveiling" of the Benson Police Department Highway Safety Trailer.
The Highway Safety Trailer, and its included equipment, was purchased with funds provided by the NC Governor's Highway Safety Program. Our department received an all inclusive grant, totaling over $15,000, in July of this year to purchase a cargo trailer, and equip it with all the items needed to effectively, and efficiently stage traffic checkpoints.
Some of the equipment purchased with the Governor's Highway Safety Program funds were the 12' x 7' cargo trailer, four 1500 watt floodlights, a 6500 watt generator, rechargeable flashlights, extension cords, reflective safety vests, traffic cones, and reflective informational signs.
Officers of the Benson Police Department, to include Lt. Greg Percy, Det. Danny Lucas, Officer Mike Smith, and Officer Joey Harrell, spent many hours researching purchases, placing equipment orders, and installing equipment in the trailer, and Chief Kenneth Edwards would like to express his gratitude to them, for their dedication and hard work. The support of the Town of Benson Board of Commissioners, and Town leaders is also appreciated, as is the generosity of the North Carolina Governor's Highway Safety Program.
