 - - -PRESS RELEASE- - -

May 17, 2005

On May 23, 2005 the spring statewide "Click It or Ticket" campaign will begin. In conjunction with this campaign, Benson Traffic Enforcement Officer Danny Lucas has announced that officers of the Benson Police Department, and other local agencies, will be conducting a "Click It or Ticket" checkpoint on June 2, 2005. Representatives from the NC Governor's Highway Safety Program will be at this checkpoint, and representatives from the local media are invited to attend.

This checkpoint will take place on Highway 301 North near North Honeycutt Street in Benson, and will run from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM. All vehicle traffic will be inspected, and NO WARNINGS will be given for Seat Belt or Child Restraint violations. Additional checkpoints will be held at other locations in Benson during the "Click It or Ticket" campaign, both during the day and at night.

According to Officer Lucas, who will attend the statewide kickoff event in Kernersville on May 23, 2005, a special emphasis has been placed this year on encouraging seat belt use in pickup trucks. During the last year, approximately 150 fatalities occurred involving occupants of pickup trucks, due to their failure to wear a seatbelt.

"Signs will be posted to inform all motorists of the checkpoints," Officer Lucas said, and "I encourage all drivers to remain alert as they approach, since officers will be in the travel lanes."

For additional information about the checkpoints, or the "Click It or Ticket" campaign, please contact Traffic Enforcement Officer Danny Lucas at 919-894-3616.
