On May 12th, 2005, a report concerning the possible Embezzlement of Funds from Liberty Commons Nursing and Rehabilitation Center of Benson was filed with the Benson Police Department.
After an extensive investigation into the allegations, it was determined that approximately $18,000 had been taken from the company, and that approximately $23,000 had been misappropriated within the company's books. On July 5th, 2005, an arrest was made in the case, and 16 Felony charges were filed by Lt. Greg Percy. The person arrested, Tammy Moore, is a former employee of Liberty Commons. She was placed in the Johnston County Jail under a $160,000 Secured Bond.
Chief Edwards states that, "My investigators, and particularly Lt. Percy, have devoted a great deal of time and effort to this investigation. While I am disappointed that the crimes occurred, I am very pleased that we were able to identify a suspect, and bring charges against her."
Chief Edwards also would like to acknowledge the assistance of the NC Attorney General's Medicaid Investigations Unit, the NC State Bureau of Investigation, and Liberty Healthcare's Financial Department. "Each agency contributed their expertise to our investigation, and I and Lt. Percy are grateful for their assistance," says Edwards.
Mrs. Moore was charged with 7 counts of Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, 1 count of Attempted Obtaining Property by False Pretenses, and 8 counts of Corporate Malfeasance. The Benson Police Department has concluded their investigation into this matter, but it is being reviewed at the state level, and additional charges are possible.
